Revolizer -The Design

Dry power inhalers (DPIs) are emerging as cost – effective, simple-to-use and environmentally preferred devices for pulmonary drug delivery.

The Revolizer is a revolutionary new DPI device, which is the result of a design and development programme to address the critical requirements of an ideal inhalation device. It provides accurate dosing and excellent lung deposition – even a low inspiratory flow rates – combined with ease of use.

The Revolizer is an extremely simple device. The user opens the device, inserts the capsule, shuts the device and inhales.

The Revolizer consists of the mouthpiece, the capsule chamber and the base.

The Mouthpiece is designed to provide a good grip of the mouth on the device.
It includes a mesh, which ensures that, even in the most unlikely situation of the medication capsule breaking into pieces, the fragments will not be inhaled.

The Base house the spike assembly, which gets activated when the Revolizer is opened or closed. This set into motion the movement of the spike through the linking assembly. The spike enters the capsule chamber through the guides provided and pierces two holes in the capsule from which the medication is released for inhalation.

The Capsule Chamber holds the medication capsule during inhalation. The design of the capsule chamber and the baffles inside it ensures maximum drug delivery to the targeted site of action – the lungs.

Compliance
In any chronic disease, compliance of patients with their prescribed treatments will inevitably depends on day-to-day convenience and simplicity of drug administration. These are particularly relevant to people with chronic respiratory disease like asthma and COPD. In addition to receiving an accurately targeted dose of drug, the patient must like the inhaler, which implies ease of use combined with a simple, robust and reliable design. User-friendliness and acceptability of the device in psychosocial terms such as peer pressure among children are now recognized as key selection criteria to ensure good compliance and cost effectiveness of therapy.

Although dry powder inhalers represents a major advanced over pressurized MDIs, none of the currently used DPIs has all the characteristics sought in an ‘ideal inhaler’.

Reliability and durability
During its life time a portable inhaler may be subjected to unintentional impacts resulting from the patients dropping the devices during use or transit. Since such accidental behavior can be reasonably expected, it is important to understand its effect on the performances of the device.

The Revolizer has been designed to be robust enough to withstand the impact of dropping. Even in such conditions, it remains fully functional without any damae to the external casework.
