Your Peak Flow Master is a simple and easy tool. You can use it to measure your peak flow. Peak flow is an indication of how well the air is moving through your lungs. If you have asthma your breathing tubes are narrowed, resulting in a lower number. Therefore, knowing this number helps you to keep track of your asthma and helps you to control it. This leaflet explains how to use your Peak Flow Master and take care of it.

Peak Flow Master

How to Use your Peak Flow Master:

Step 1
See whether the mouthpiece is fitted into the Peak Flow Master. If not, attach it.

Step 2
Move the pointer along the slot towards the mouthpiece till it dose not move any further.

Step 3
Hold the Peak Flow Master so that your fingers are away from the scale and the slot. Do not cover the holes at the end of the Peak Flow Master.

Step 4
It is better to take your peak flow reading while standing up. Breathe in deeply. Place the mouthpiece of the Peak Flow Master in your mouth. Keep your lips closed firmly around the mouthpiece. Blow out just once as hard and as fast as you can. Do not put your tongue inside the mouthpiece, while blowing into the Peak Flow Master. If you cough or spit into the mouthpiece, just take your reading again.

Step 5
Now, look at the scale. The pointer has moved up on the scale. Note where the pointer has stopped on the scale. That number is your peak flow reading.

Step 6
Repeat steps 2 to 5 and take two more readings. Now you have totally three readings in the Peak Flow Chart. You should take your readings twice a day, first thing in the morning, and then at bed time, or as directed by your doctor.

How to Record your Peak Flow Master
It is important to keep a record of your peak flow. Use the chart provided. For your morning reading, record the highest of your three peak flow readings on the chart. See the sample peak flow chart, shown over leaf. Do this again for your bedtime peak Flow reading. By joining the dots over a period of time you can see you see how your peak flow changes from day to day. If you suddenly become wheezy or breathless at any time, make sure you measure and note your flow.

In case you get an unusually low reading
If you take your Peak Flow measurement and get an unusually low reading, it could mean that your asthma is getting worse. Or that your Peak Flow Master may be broken. Check to make sure that it is not broken. Slide the pointer along the slot to make sure that it moves freely. If you are sure that you are following the instructions correctly and that your meter is not broken, contact your doctor for advice.

No Matter what your peak flow readings are, if you are experiencing chest tightness, shortness, shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing, you should always follow your doctor’s advice.
